With GDAK you can create databases on your Android device and fill them with caches via the Geoacaching.com Life API. Just install GDAK, let GDAK create the necessary directories, press the menu button and choose for Create Database. You can create as many databases as you want, but one database will suffice for most users.

It is also possible to view and work with databases from GSAK, the Geocaching Swiss Army Knife application for Microsoft Windows PCs, on your Android device. GDAK uses databases created by the GSAK program, so you will also need to have GSAK installed on your PC and create one or more databases there before using GDAK.

To use GDAK, just use Windows Explorer to copy your GSAK database folder to the subfolder named GDAK on your Android's SD card. If you have more than one GSAK database you can copy one or more database folders. Each folder you copy will be available in GDAK.

The GDAK folder is created when you install the GDAK app on your Android device. GDAK will use the copied database folders for your offline caching. (To find the location of your GSAK database folders, go to the "Tools" menu in GSAK and select "GSAK Folder Finder", then select "Databases" from the dropdown menu, then click the "Show" button.)

Once you’ve copied the folders, GDAK is ready to go, so let’s take a quick tour. When you start GDAK, the first screen you see will look something like this:

Of course, when you start GDAK, unless you are standing 5.86 kilometres from De Tuspeel in Limburg, The Netherlands, the caches you see will probably be very different.

Assuming the GPS in your Android device is on when you start GDAK, what you see is a list of the caches closest to your current location. Each item shows the cache name, the difffculty/terrain value, the container size and an icon indicating the type of cache. In this example, the first cache is a multi-cache, the next two are mystery or puzzle caches, the next one is another multi, the next one is traditional, and the last three that you can see completely are also multis. On the right side is a blue ribbon followed by a number. That number represents the number of favorite points awarded to this cache by other geocachers. Below that is the distance from your current location, in either metres/kilometres or feet/miles. You can set your preference in Settings (see GDAK Settings below). Last is an arrow that shows the approximate direction from your current location to the cache.

You can also see that some of the D/T values are highlighted in blue. These are caches that had their GSAK user flag set when the database was copied to GDAK.

Tapping on any of the caches will bring up the information about that cache, as you see here in the image on the right. Note that the cache information has eight tabs, but for this introduction we will only look at the “Info” tab. The contents of the other tabs should be self-explanatory.

The “Info” tab contains the basic information about the cache. It will also display any information that may have been placed into the “Short Description” field of the cache description page by the cache owner. It will also show the contents of any GSAK user fields. Those are the data fields that you can use in GSAK to place any data you desire.
